VSA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES: Writing scenarios and simulated participant scripts in health and community services

With the rising complexity of health and community services, concerns with professional communication have grown exponentially. Shared communication with patients and clients has now become a critical component of person-centred practice.

Over the past 29 years, there has been a drive to enhance the experiential dimension of communication skills learning by using case studies, role-play and simulation-based education (SBE). A feature of SBE is the opportunity for learners to practise diverse skills in a safe learning environment. However, this requires careful planning and expert scenario design and script development by the course designer.

This workshop will outline key features of a quality scenario design and provide you with an opportunity to create your own scenario and simulated participant script using an established simulation scenario-writing framework.

Using interactive small group methods such as discussions, brainstorm activities, paired exercises and small group practical hands-on activities, this workshop will provide you with the opportunity to:

  • Identify core aspects of a communication skills learning and teaching process
  • Appraise the advantages and challenges associated with simulated participant methods in health and community services education
  • Discuss the features and rationale of a well-constructed simulation scenario and simulated participant script
  • Create an individualised simulation scenario and simulated participant script

Places are limited to 25 participants per session.
